  1. The question paper was really hard(GREAT WORK BY INSIGHTS TEAM)..Yes i have low marks.. But after writing every test i m learning something…feeling the standard of preparing for upsc…Hope i would bounce back next time..

    1. yes vikram ji….the test is really hard one then last 3..just attempted..i too scored low marks…91.33..hope to improve next time..

      1. Hi Tarun, I’m really confused abt joining the test series. Do they provide pdf of test separately of questions and answers or in a single pdf of both.???

    2. Take it more as a learning process and less as an exam. Don’t expect only marks, infact just feel happy for the things u learn for the real exam, UPSC prelims. Insights Test Series is only a mirror to show u where u r lacking 🙂

      1. Hii friend…. I have confusion about test V,Is it important to complete all chapter of India and contemporary world II, because there is some chapters related to world history

  2. Great mix of hard and easy questions. You have correctly spotted the upsc pulse.By the way guys,my mark is 110.what about others?

    1. where is the link for exam. i joined today but not able to find the link. pls provide so that i could start.

  3. It was specified in the timetable that syllabus of science 9th class , but most of the question came from class 10th.so now in coming test are you people going to ask from class 9 also and 10th also..?

    1. Topics from 9th and 10th NCERT were merged, as 9th NCERT is quite technical and not very useful for Prelims. In the next Test too, questions will be mixed for Science. 🙂

    2. Hey. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. But the attached picture is the timetable I have since before the beginning of the test series. The timetable clearly mentions “Class IX and X” … and for books which are from class IX – it has been mentioned clearly, whereas for some other books, the space was left empty. Clearly, this means Class X books. Right?

I even checked the syllabus mentioned in my Insights account. It’s the same. I don’t think the syllabus can be different, can it?

Click on the attachment to get a sharper image.

    3. Bro the doubt is cleared. Read the featured comment.
Test 4 has combination of 9th and 10th NCERT and same goes for Test 5.

  4. Dear insights ,

In Q.No 8 you said that Bagasse cannot be used to manufacture but the many write ups on google suggest that it can be used as an organic fertilizer..could you please clarify ?

    1. Bagasse is the fibrous matter that remains after sugarcane stalks, crushed to extract its juice. The dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane.
It is used as a biofuel and in the manufacture of pulp and building materials.
i think it is more used as fuel than organic fertilizer..

      1. The question asked can it be….so it does not matter if it is more often used or rarely used..

        1. There is a catch. Bagasse (usually its ash) is used as a fertilizer in the same way as any green nutritious, fibrous plant would be. The question is whether Bagasse is used to ‘manufacture’ fertilizers or not. No, Molasses is instead used. 🙂

          1. Thanks for your kind reply. And sorry, I actually misunderstood the question with the term “manufacturing”.

    2. There is a catch. Bagasse (usually its ash) is used as a fertilizer in the same way as any green nutritious, fibrous plant would be. The question is whether Bagasse is used to ‘manufacture’ fertilizers or not. No. Molasses is instead used. 🙂

      1. So indirectly you mean to say that Bagasse can only be used as an organic fertilizer and not as an artificial fertilizer which needs to be manufactured ?

      2. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus: With no offense sir! We appreciate your initiatives and efforts but more efforts should go into the framing of your options. Above example is a clear wordplay, Manufacture : (of a living thing) produce (a substance) naturally.”most plants use the sun’s light to manufacture their food through photosynthesis”; I can also say compost manufacturing process. So do you want us to spend time on figuring out what is your line of thought. A simple word of adding chemical or natural fertilizer would have been much clear. How can we guess what kind of fertilizer you are looking for? .If you do an honest analysis one can pull lot of examples like this. Even some options are not even complete / ill formatted. I would like to remind you sir, aspirants are paying enough money they must be respected. You can set hard questions by checking concepts not by ambiguous confusing options. Looking forward for good questions and also good options.

    1. Bagasse is the fibrous matter that remains after sugarcane stalks, crushed to extract its juice. The dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane.
It is used as a biofuel and in the manufacture of pulp and building materials.
i think it is used more as fuel than organic fertilizer..

      1. yup…even i read it somehwere that it is used as a fertilizer(organic)….but the solutions is contradicting it..

    2. There is a catch. Bagasse (usually its ash) is used as a fertilizer in the same way as any green nutritious, fibrous plant would be. The question is whether Bagasse is used to ‘manufacture’ fertilizers or not. No. 🙂

  5. Request to clarify following doubt
Q.No.54 :Since term magma is used for molten rocks within earth and lava when they reach on surface. Further soil formation is a surface phenomena so wont magma be a wrong option( instead lava would be correct)?

    1. magma forms igneous rocks…which are further eroded to form sedimentary rocks and soil …..

    2. lava is formed from magma (magma becomes lava when it comes to surface), lava forms igneous and so on…so magma is ultimate source, further, don’t think this much technically for UPSC prelims. 🙂

  6. Dear insights ,

In Q. 66 , heat pollution , discharge of industrial pollutants and habitat fragmentation are common reasons for decline in any species in India , albeit minor ones and gharial is no different. please see the below links

    http://www.walkthroughindia.com/wildlife/gharial-indias-most-critically-endangered-species-of-reptile/

    http://www.downtoearth.org.in/coverage/flawed-conservation-policies-lead-to-decline-in-gharial-population-8697

    1. The question was very specific. It does not ask what can affect Gharial population. Extreme heat pollution will surely do. But, given the heat pollution of Indian rivers is not very large, it was not a contributor for the ‘drastic decline’ in the last 60 years. So, IUCN categorically neglects it.

IUCN is considered an authority on conservation of species. You should stick to it. While framing questions, UPSC often uses their findings.

    1. let him use unfair means and score a perfect 100..
focus on your performance only…leave the rest 🙂

      1. You are right sd I should not think about others and should concentrate on my performance but your profile name indicates you are deprived of success due to the actions of others but interesting name.

        1. im deprived of success – not because of the actions of others..but due to my own errors….

  7. dear insights team thank you very much for providing such qualitative test series but according to your test schedule, question will be asked from IXth class of science but i found questions from class Xth of science sub.

    1. Yeah. Saw a couple of references to Xth Std NCERT Science textbook in the answer key. Anyways the quality of questions were quite good. A blessing in disguise to expect the unexpected 😀

  8. As usual Test questions were brilliant but what I found in questions was they were not as per the syllabus provided in the time table
for example questions on science were based on 10th NCERT’s but syllabus included 9th NCERT for science . (questions now. 6,8,9…)

hope Insight team will not make such blunders in future.

One mor thing I want to point out is u failed to mention Contemporary Indaia-2
in time table it is just mentioned as contemporary India. For a beggener like me it creates confusion.
so I would like to suggest plz avoid such mistakes in future. And plz revise time table for such silly mistakes if any! which confuse begginers.

Over all nice quality paper and also current events covered as mentioned in time table but few errors as mentioned above.

    Thanks Insight for such initiative!!!

    1. Thank you Rohit.

Science NCERT: Topics from 9th and 10th NCERT were merged, as 9th NCERT is quite technical and not very useful for Prelims. In the next Test too, questions will be mixed for Science. 🙂

Schedule: Contemporary India-I was covered in Test 3. Next part covered in this one. For each Test the Class is clearly mentioned. 🙂

      1. Dear Insights,
As u said above… for the next test(i.e test 5)the questions will be mixed for science…Does that mean u will be framing more questions from the same 10th science or else will from both 10th and 11th

        science?..please clarify sir….

  9. Thank you insights for such tricky and tough questions. Now I feel how a below 10th std. NCERT and CA question exhaust someone to its core.

  10. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Sir , in Q. 100
Third option is 3. Whether commercial banks have adhered to the lending limits prescribed by RBI
My doubt is : suppose a commercial bank is lending more to a particular company (over the limits prescribed by the RBI) to make more profits and because the extra credit flow, the company is having an extra-edge …
Can CCI still not deny it…
plz correct me if im wrong

    1. That actually falls under the regulatory domain of the RBI. Banks have to submit an annual report to RBI about such practices. In between a financial year, it may be very difficult for any other body to obtain such information.

  11. Are we supposed to do india and contemporary world as it includes world history which isnt a part of pre? Please help!

    1. Certainly you should read that too as it compares india and other countries at that time.By the way it is also very much interesting.

    2. It is a part of overall plan – Prelims + Mains. Few questions relevant to Prelims will be asked from them (like it was done for Test-4). Thank you.

  12. The syllabus for today’s test was ncert books of 9th class. . .how come most of the questions asked from 10th class ncert. Plz clarify my doubts

  13. Insights Prelims Test Series Sir I AM Continuously asking from you butsir u r not clearing my doubt.. thius is my querry,, will u allow us to appear in all these test after some time.. u said in ur notification which i am attaching here which is at the end..

“You can take online exam only once as of now. This is to make sure that Ranks are genuine and to bringseriousness in exam preparation. Knowing that you can take exam 2 times might affect seriousness. For revision you will have PDF file which you can download anytime. However, at appropriate interval we will increase number of attempt by one to help you revise even better.”

    1. As we said, if needed, we will increase it at an appropriate time. Till then you can revise the solutions and prepare for the upcoming tests. Thank you.

      1. no.please dont do that. That would kill the purpose of the test.Even if u do that, dont include them again in the rank list.

  14. Q99 about the acidic content of stomach. This is what I found over net.
That way only those food stuffs will further acidify the stomach whose pH is less than the pH of stomach.
    Isn’t it?
Overall a nicely set paper. A dozen qns incorrect under General Science was an eye-opener. o_O

      1. http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm

Food PH and acidity are two different thing. The acidity is caused by the release of gastric juices. The hard the food to get digested the more acidic the juices will be. Though eggs are basic being animal protein more pepsin is released triggering acid reflux. Banana wont cause acid reflex -High glycemic index and easy to digest. Food PH and acidity are two different things. Please do necessary research before you improvise. Especially when dealing with science. And there is no attempt to correct these mistakes that will cause harm to the test takers.

  16. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Can you please tell me where is your office located in Bangalore?

  17. Dear Insightians,

What according to you is a good rank in the tests, within which we should aim so that we can be sure of getting through
Prelims 2016 ? Though we can never be sure of but just an estimate as per u guys….

    1. Friend it is based on your current rank.Move step by step but you could work hard and improve even in a single test.I myself went from 752 rank to 99 in 3rd test and 44 as of now.Aim to come within 150.

      1. If you don’t mind can you tell me how do you manage your day mainly for your optional ? Because I tend to neglect the optional…

        1. Dolly first concentrate on the test series for a month if u wish u could spend 1.30 hours for optionals, but I think prelims is the gate way to mains and that’s why u should first concentrate on that.I think u are feared due to some pessimistic persons advice.Be happy. If u want contact me by mail id or phone. Its in my disqus page.

  18. what strategy should I use when reading chemistry, whether I should omit unwanted parts or should cover the full chapter?I feel so bored while reading chemistry. Please give me a good solution.

    1. Focus on those blue boxes and things related to everyday chemistry. Other things are not important. 🙂

  19. sir ,

    In Q18 . answer is D ,

how multipurpose river projects couse excessive sedimentation of river bed?

In the “Justification and learning” it has mentioned that “It results in rockier stream beds.” please explain..

    thank you.

    1. They stop the flow of sediment carrying rivers causing the deposition of sediments and rockier stream beds. 🙂

  20. hi insights
I would like to attempt the prelims test series 2016.I have created the Id and password.further process for payment is not coming.I am confused. It said money has been detected and will refund in 7 buisness days.wat to do

  21. Got a pathetic score, was this test really tough? While solving the paper I thought this paper is easy, however numbers tell a diff story.

  22. Dear insight please provide ranking with number of test takers. Half information is not helping in performance assessment. This being the 4th test any previous issue must have been sorted out.
    Please consider it urgently.

      1. please ask qsns only from that mentioned in the sylllabus for a particular test.

dont ask from class 10th if d syllbys consits of class 9th in a particular test.

otherwise it would be highly demotivating.

  23. Why to provide syllabus when you are not going to adhere it anyway. Did well in exam but most of the paper was not from what I read from NCERTs or The Yojana

  24. i got only 64 marks in Test 4…………
i am not satisfied with my performance …………….
being a working professional its tough to get much time but devote most of it…….
But have doubts about my efforts……… would it work for me………..

    1. Stay the course, Mr Choudhary. You will do well. Make short notes of the NCERTs (10-20 pgs) and revise them on your commute to work or during lunch break. All the best.

      1. Thanks for your reply………. Brother
i am making notes from NCERTs ………….ON notepad…………………
what about the low scores……………. i am still on 64 out off 200……..
        feeling guilty……………..

  25. Q. 32 on vegetative propagation. In grafting two plants are used. So the answer is contradicting the explanation.

    1. From the given options, it appears ‘b’ is most appropriate. Mark that. Because statement ‘b’ is not wrong – cutting a plant and re-planting it, is vegetative propagation by only one plant.

      1. Sorry, sorry, sorry. I just noticed that option ‘a’ suggests ‘multiple plants’, so yeah, your query is valid according to me now : )

I knew veg. propagation can be done by cutting one plant, so I marked that. Did not think about grafting.

    2. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus can you please clarify this? I too have doubt here as two plants are being used to produce offspring in grafting.

      Thanks

  26. question 6: In music, the term note is generally used to represent

Justification:The term “note” in music describes the pitch and the duration of a
musical sound. The pitch describes how low or high a note sounds. So, (a) is correct.
The same note can sound soft or loud depending on how its played. So, (b) is
    correct.

if both option a and b are correct, then why b is marked wrong

    1. And the explanation is a mistake i think (with regard to ‘b’ being mentioned as correct) .. Please correct me if I am wrong/if I’ve understood wrong.

  27. Dear insights,i am subscriber of insights test series 2015 and 2016 but don’t get refunds discount,i have allready send 4 times detail of payment on given addres….please check my e- mail id is mth.ajeet@gmail.com

    1. Please do not worry. It will be done. We have said this earlier too. Thank you.

  28. here aspirants are so intelligent.they r getting marks in range(170-195).i suggest one thing if they r getting these marks honestly…then i m sure they will write mains-2016 but if they r getting by unfair means then plz-plz be honest bcz u r going to cheat urself and with ur people.it very tough to get 170 marks due to human errors, wrong questions etc..
    plz do’nt mind…what i think i told.

    1. yes..rank 1 got 195 in test 3, insights must fix a particular time for tests for one and all, otherwise tests would not mean much.

some one was asking for multiple appearances at the same test. I strongly object to any such inititiative. It would kill the purpose of the test.

      1. the idea behind multiple appearances is to revise your own preparation once again by way of tests. It’s like shooting the same target multiple times until you hit bullseye. Relative performance here shouldn’t be a priority as CSP is taken by 100 times (or more) the number of candidates taking the test.

        1. 1. relative performance does matter, that’s a motivatng factor of any test, tHats why test series are popular, whether its vision ias test series, synergy , CL etc etc, people join for relative perfrmnces only, and for your kind information none of these test involve all the candidates (as u said 100 times) that are gonna appear in the CSE exam, but ony a few of them.

          2. giving the same test multiple tmes would not be benefical at all, as practising these qsns again and agan would be futile, as CSP would contain different questions . Moreover, if one wants to mug up the test questions, why to reappear. Why not mug up form the pdf.

          3. I have not joined the test series yet, though i have all the tests PDF with me available for free from someone. So y should i invest rs 6000. It is because of the relative performance i.e rank that a test series provides, which is a motivating factor. Its all about motivation .

          1. Consider this dear Aspirant, lets say you are right. But how does it help in the preparation? If there are several first timers, non serious candidates appearing you may score in the top 10. However, is that sufficient for the big one? The relative performance here isn’t indicative of your relative performance in the CSP. However, considering the way Team Insights sets papers, your score is a very good measure of your absolute level of preparation. So getting 120-135 will motivate you to get even higher the next time and not the top 10 rank (with a score of 195, which is a total joke as someone earlier pointed out)

Appearing multiple times for the same questions promotes revision which gets added to your latent knowledge base which can be used for solving ‘Related’ questions as concepts are clear. And since you have not joined the tests, I suggest that you don’t worry about rankings too much. Do be thorough with the PDFs as they are one of the best solutions I have come across which focus on every option and not just the right answer. Something I haven’t seen anywhere.

Anyway, break khallas. Time to prepare for Test 5!

            All the best.

      2. Yes its really depressing to find ur rank moving from 4 to 99 at the end.Could reduce the day to 5 as I don’t think anyone is so busy as to not spare 2hours.

    2. How much someone else scores, should only bother you enough to motivate you to study. No more. There is no difference between those who read up solutions and give the test and those who flag others’ answers under the secure initiative. Their mindsets are the same. They basically want to demotivate others.

Also, since we don’t know whether someone did actually study the answers and then give the test, there is no point in discussing. Happily assume that they studied that well. You should strive for 195 too. You’ll surprise yourself in the end! : )

      1. hiii yashaswi….fully agree with what you said….one shud not think about the other’s way of scoring…it only matters what we want from ourselves to be there in the final list….its perception about oneself and nt the means other aquired …we shud strive hard to achieve wat we deserve rather pointing finger or blame on others without knowing the truth…..

      2. Friend do u think is it possible? Is it not natural to be angry on immoral activities but I will try to follow ur words. You r right about that flagging thing .I think they assume themselves as Shakespeare or einstien.

      3. Haha….If 200 is the total marks… I assume 195 is completely possible and it was in Test 3 which was easier than other tests (hope we all agree on this)…Hence I happily assume there are people who are studying and retaining very well…Hope the person does equally well in UPSC Prelims 2016..:) 🙂

    3. you r right bro.I got so furious on seeing 195.33 marks and I felt If it is real or some kind of Farce.Would they not think while doing this kind of comical things?

  29. Please tell me how to prepare for Human Geography. Don’t give me a book-list. I want topic wise sources. I am ready to buy any book.
    I already have following:
    1)Human Geo by Majid Hussain
    2)Models & Theories by K Siddartha
    3)Evolution of Geo Thought
    4)Rupa Series
5)Spectrum Geo (This Book is really nice but I don’t think he covers entire syllabus.)
    Thanks.

    1. You can do away with all of these 5 books, and just follow NCERTs mentioned in the Test Schedule. 🙂

  30. Sir, after facing complete ignorance from insights team regarding the refund of discounted amount for test series 2016, I am writing here. This is the 3rd year in a row I have subscribed to your test series and greatly benefited from it. I have applied timely by mailing at the email id you gave, i.e. insights.exams@gmail.com with all the receipts. The date for refund has already passed and I have repeatedly pleaded to process my refund. Please take corrective actions and consider my request. I am not very rich to let go off money, but investing in your test series was my priority. I trust the quality in your tests hence went a step ahead by diverting my limited funds to your test series program.

    My email id is anandkmr1506@gmail.com.

Please check your inbox as I have sent you all receipts. Kindly take corrective measures.

    Thanks.

    1. Hey, man. Chill.

“I am not very rich to let go off money” – It does not matter whether you are ‘very rich’, or not ‘very rich’. The point is, if you are in need of that money asap, that is what you should have mentioned clearly in your mail to them. If you made it clear to them about your urgency, they would have replied. (and Insights had mentioned early on that they would refund immediately if there was any urgency, but asked us to wait for sometime.)

But despite this, if they did not reply, you should have simply mentioned on this page that you have some urgency and want them to check their mails and refund asap, rather than talking about ‘letting go off money’ and ‘facing complete ignorance’ etcetc.. this sort of stuff happens in Delhi, and not with Insights. Moreover, there are probably hundreds of students who have written (including me) asking for the discount. Can’t expect them to reply to each one. (No, I have not received any reply, neither am I expecting one, and I have not received the refund)

By the way, the email address you should have sent your mail, was support@insightsias.com, not the one you’ve mentioned i think.

      1. Yashaswi, thanks for your valuable reply, I will be highly indebted if the needful is done.

    2. Please do not worry. It will be done. We have said this earlier too. Thank you.

  31. Q23:

“the following species (in increasing order of the food web) consume the produce of an agricultural field” …

So i understood the question as, “each one of these species consume food from the same field, but in which animal is the concentration of pesticides going to be the highest?” … so… relatively, there would be a greater concentration of pesticide in a rat compared to mongoose, and more pesticide concentration in a mongoose than a human… because humans weigh more than mongoose and mongoose, more than rats.. 😛

    1. No. Species at higher level in food chain consume accumulate higher concentrations of a pesticide. For e.g. a thousand small krills (with high pesticide content) may be eaten 10 small fishes, and those 10 small fishes may be eaten by 1 human being.

      1. Yes. I agree. I misunderstood the initial sentence, “the following species (in increasing order of the food web) consume food from the same field” : )

      2. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus: But mongoose are not eaten by human beings in general. Your argument is correct if the food chain is connected. Rats eaten by snakes, snakes eaten by mongoose but there is a break here. Again the conditions are ambiguous. They are consuming the produce from the field. By the disconnection in the food chain how can you explain bio magnification here? Had the question been rat, Mongoose, snakes that would have been relevant.

  32. Can some of you share the time table that you follow in your studies in a day ??? Please say things like when you read current events, mains test series, answer writing challenges, Test subjects and also how could you keep your mind in motivated state… I am asking you because I find difficulty in handling all these things equally. 36. @@insightsprelimstestseries:disqus. Dear sir
Being a working professional i am unable to cope with test syllabus. Kindly give some insights for us how to complete the syllabus. As there are secure mains, debate, current events and so on. If you provide guidelines regarding topics which are important and unimportant that would be great help to us. Thanking you.

    1. While reading NCERT, focus on keywords/key concepts and those blue/red boxes. You may cut down the time spent on dynamic portion until you finish static part. 🙂

  38. i am going to file a complaint against insights since they are involved in tax evasion…………….

  39. Sir I feel exasperated as I am within top 100 but unable to enter top 50 and I could not find out the fault in my preparation. What could be done sir?I expect ur kind advice.

    1. Brother let me tell u something. First of all in first test my rank was initially 83 and now its 119. 2nd test 34-45. 3rd test 262-339. Fourth test i have not given yet.

So what do u get from this trend.

Secondly just check the marks of the topper of third test 194.67 . By no means somebody can score such marks unless they cheat or are superhumans. So bro in my opinion dont take ranks seriously. Yes you should be scoring 120+ on a consistent basis. Also these tests main purpose acc to me is to keep ourselves in rythm, learn from mistakes we do in paper and practice.

I hope u get where i am pointint to.

      1. Extremely thanks for mitigating my confusion bro and I understand the concept that u have tried to express. As for the marks above 195 I got rage and I could not understand until now the purpose of their immoral action.I wonder how persons like you are keeping such interesting profile names.I like it very much.

        1. Thanks…..for the name compliment. Even i dont remember how i picked it at that moment.

Right direction indicators ffor me are(no full proof formula but it works for me and I hope it would work for you also).

          1) if i am feeling content after my days work.
          2) i am consistently scoring 120-140s at insights.
          3) whenever somebody asks me a question and i am able to answer him or make him understand that but there is an underlying current dissatisfaction within in myself , i will go through that topic again.

          As for study plan:

          1) one shld not rely solely on indights plan (no offence insights.) Reason being : hold over prevailing current issues will be the game changer.
          2) optional cant be neglected or left for later.
          3) even if i score 115 but i have done 10% of my optional in that week i will be ok.
          4) rest like hours of study , books etc all are irrelevant and mindless topic to discuss upon. They wont matter, unless u are not studying and finishing what is required from u by upsc.

And lastly bhai u are doin grt in my opinion rank of 84 is great. Keep ur rythm till aug 7 and most likely u will sail through. Also learn to enjoy and be happy with what u have but never compromise with the hunger for what u want to get

          Peace Love..

          1. Thank u very much bro Probably, the best piece of advice I have got up to this moment feeling confident now.

          2. wow u too follow religion as me in disqus.I am thinking of revising all the ncerts from 6th to 12th and previous current affairs from now onwards as I feel it would be very helpful during full ncert test.Is it good or I would be well of to concentrate on the current test portion only , the reason for this line of thinking is 6 days looks more than enough for studying the test portions as I have no other job or hobby other than the few minutes spent on exercise. What could be your suggestion?

                1. Brother install it…if u are comfortable with it…dont think of as a annoying app which keeps people distracted…..rather think of it as a platform for like mind people to discuss.
Wld u believe me i have installed since i have started prep…else i had never used it. To be honest i had bought a smartphone for prep only.

Btw my no. 8826426554 (if whatsapp)
                  8398876780(if u call try this)

                  1. Yes this is me funny if u see me in real life I think then u will be scared.I am a child in my heart bro has developed the body to get confidence that’s all but just want to crush people who mock me.

                    1. Thanks bro.I have became a cynical being now and often in rage over others, could not reduce my anger and that has cost me my mind peace.I now started isolating myself from outside world due to this problem but most of my rage is due to my perception.Constant violent thoughts and behavior has also became a huge hindrance to my happiness but somehow I manage it now as I have chose this road to be an ias or else I couldnt even imagine my state of things.Like Robert frost poem This road has made all the difference.

      2. What should then be the indicator to assure me that I am going in the right path. Please reply me as I feel something is missing in my preparation. As for the fourth test my rank is 84 until now and hoping to fulfill my desire in the upcoming test.Could you share your study plan?

  41. In the time table insight wrote that in test 4 NCERTs of 9th class will be asked. I prepared that only, and in solution i found out most of questions were from 10th NCERT. I scored pathetic 49 marks.

    1. Mr. Collector, remove your sunglasses and carefully go through the syllabus 😀 .. The only questions that were ‘out of syllabus’, were science-based questions (questions from 9th+10th std science were asked whereas syllabus mentioned 9th Science only).

      1. if u have some spare time plz go through the answer booklet. Almost all the Geography and economics questions were from 10th class NCERT. Search for ‘Xth’ in the whole pdf u will get to know about this.

  42. Dear Insights,

    Q65. Given correct answer: Option ‘c’: 2, 3 and 4.

But the question specifically mentions, “…..always differs from….”

Intensive subsistence farming uses “high doses of biochemical inputs and……” (Pg. 35, Class X Geography) .. is ‘chemical input’ not a modern agricultural input? Correct answer then would not include statement 2; that is, option ‘c’ should have only been, ‘3 and 4 only’ ..

    1. No its Ok. The question was about subsistence agriculture. This is why there was no option as “3 and 4 only”, so that there is no confusion.

You should always choose the most appropriate option. An absolutely ‘objective’ question can be elusive some times. 🙂

      1. Alrighto : ) .. Another query: With regard to India Since Independence.

        – I’ve read Guha’s India After Gandhi, but not India Since Independence.
        – I haven’t yet attempted questions under the Mains Self Study Guide initiative, so I don’t know what the question are like, so apologies for this query 😛
        – But can I stick to Guha (while trying to complement it with Bipan Chandra)? What may be the drawbacks of doing so? Apart from of course, the fact that I’ll have to find out the relevant chapters for each test and so on. And consequently may be more requirement of time :-/

        1. You can make a topic list, stick to NCERT and do fringe topics from Guha and Bipin chandra. 🙂

  43. Does anyone else feel India Since Independence is heavily pro-Nehru? Well… it is quite natural to expect Bipan Chandra to be so (marxist historian, after all :P), but do we use what we learn from it for writing answers on the same lines? There hardly is any critical analysis I feel. He just does not stop praising Nehru. He could at least have discussed what the mistakes of ‘Government of India’ was, if not those of ‘Nehru’ 😛

  44. Dear insights, what are the necessary things to be read for the topic … ‘diversity in living beings’ (regarding plant and animal classification ) … is a thorough retention of names required?

    1. No, not at all. 🙂 You should understand the broad classifications, how they interact amongst each other, and characteristics of any important species.

  45. friends think of having whats up group….for this discussion purpose….because can’t access net all the time ….rather whats up data consume is less and very efficient…

    1. Please refer to the “Featured Comment” of Test-3 Discussion page. It is explained in detail. 🙂

  46. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus regarding the explanation on QUE-4. will not 1) barren land 2) land put to non agricultural uses come under uncultivated land

    1. Yes. Culturable wasteland is a more technical term for a barren land, which has not been sown for more than 5 years.

There is a difference between ‘uncultivable’ and ‘uncultivated’ land. The latter would include all non-agricultural land uses. Former implies barren (or in some cases fallow) land.

  47. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus in QUE-18 option 2 is wrong as excessive sedimentation occurs in the reservoir and not in river bed……due this the river beds turn more rockier.plz clarify

      1. is the sediment accumulation is more in areas behind the reservoir and less in areas ahead of it?

        1. Bro reservoir refers to the basin through which the river water flows and there is no such thing as behind or ahead of the reservoir.

          1. thanks arun for ur reply…….i think reservoir is a water body impounded by a dam which is located in the river basin……plz clarify if u can

  48. Im really struggling with time. Working and preparing is exhaustive.
Hey , any body here who is a fresher like me ….

I have read Pub Ad by Laxmikant and Adm Thinkers by Prasad… still I am unable to figure out how should i prepare a handy note… New Horizon… by Mohit Bhattacharya is bouncing overhead… anybody who can help me out please do,, thank you

  50. Hi Insights Team,

I need to join on Prelims and Mains Test Series now. As its late, Is it possible.? Please clarify me how i can join the series.

    1. You can join the Online Test Series. Only for the first 4 tests, your rank will not be published publicly. But you will get All India Ranking for all tests on your private dashboard.

      1. can you please publish corrigendum for each of the previous test?
        Also
I personally feel that result analysis has no worth, unless you provide
us with cumulative section-wise analysis of all the test taken so far.
Will certainly help in identifying weak areas. Please add this feature.

  51. que 20 blue color of sky : though best option is tyndall !!! but is it due to tyndall or raleigh ? because particles are smaller than wavelength
could you please tell whether blue color and red sunset are both due to same tyndall or raleigh effect ?

    1. Technically Rayeigh should be the answer, but you should choose the most appropriate one.

    2. TYNDALL is the starting point of rayleigh, the later only studied tyndall showing that scatering is inversly proproptional to 4th power of wavelenght hence blue will be scateered the most, for sunset the red color is also explained by the same for example if you have more pollution then more red color as more pollution means more dust partciles and more scaterting and more red

  52. que 4 : culturable wasteland- won’t option C be correct ?, cause these are cultivable lands left uncultivated for > 5 years due to various reasons such as disputes or religion or others which may include cultural reasons!

    1. If a land is productive, was used in last season, and now not being used for agriculture for cultural reasons, will it qualify to be a culturable wasteland? No.

Culturable wasteland is an unambigous term. The question, solution and explanation are very clear and precise. Please don’t read too much between the lines. It can cost in UPSC Prelims.

      1. @@insightsprelimstestseries:disqus thank you 🙂
the problem is this i always get stuck in these type of questions , so could you please help me root it out ?
in this que what i thought was , que mentions culturable waste land so it is implicit that the land is unused for more than 5 years !!!!
on the same lines could you answer my 2 ques , so that i can understand it better ?
1 .fallow land is : ( and one of the option is )

      2. @@insightsprelimstestseries:disqus thank you 🙂

the problem is this i always get stuck in these type of questions , so could you please help me root it out ?

1 .fallow land is : ( and one of the option is )
        land left uncultivated
( so we will not mark this as correct because it does not mention 70 %, as less could be dense, or very dense itself implies > 70%)
        Thank you in advance 🙂

  53. que 27 : moving from traditional to crop diversification especially cash crops!
though crop diversification is good for land in general , but my doubt is about cash crops as there are sufficient evidences from punjab about sugarcane , cotton from MH and coffee from W’trn ghts which has deteriorated the quality of soil further
so how could crop diversification ESPECIALLY cash crops can tackle land degradation ?

    1. You should not read the question carefully – it talks about what ‘CAN’ be offered by crop diversification. Jatropha, medicinals herbs etc consume much less water than other rice or sugarcane. Some also demand lesser nutrients than other crops, can also prevent soil erosion and stop water logging.

If you take an extreme view, then neither of the options should be correct, because not all crops can be exported, neither all may boost the food processing industry (e.g. some medicinal herbs). So, wherever the word, ‘can’ or ‘may’ is mentioned, it should be seen as a possibility.

      1. question 17: 2nd statement should be wrong as per your explanation. please clarify.

        1. Please bring the query more specifically. We will be able to clear it out.

          1. sorry my mistake
it’s question no 18: statement 2 :- Excessive sedimentation of river bed.
how? it should be less sedimentation of river bed leading to rockier bed that hampers the aquatic life.

please correct me if i am wrong

            1. No, less sedimentation does not result in rockier river beds. It is when repeated high sediment loads are dumped at the bed, such conditions occur. Due to lack of soft substrates in the river bed and loss of bed aquatic vegetaion, fishes lose good breeding grounds. This hampers overall aquatic life.

              1. one more thing, when will be the corrigendum of remaining tests will be provided. it will better if done soon for revision purpose.

                thank you

                  1. it will be convenient if you please make the clarification a featured comment.
                    thank you

                  2. q 97 is world conf on management different from un world conference on disaster reduction? whats the difference. Please reply. Thanks.

  54. que 39 statement 2 : cooler climate ensures longer crushing season !
the explanation is given about growing season which is longer in south , are crushing and growing same ?
moreover sugarcane is a tropical sub tropical plant and requires warm condition for better yield , south conditions prevents it from loo and frost , but is it correct to say that cooler climate of south provides longer growing season ? or is it moderating climate !
lastly if growing and crushing are different , how relatively cool south provides longer crushing season ?

    1. As it is known that for better yields temperatures above 50°C and below 20°C are not suitable for sugarcane’s growth. So when we move to the southern end of the country conditions are favorable, due to moderate climate.

Crushing period means time for which sugar mill will operate for crushing sugarcane (different from growing and harvesting season)…. in India crushing season starts from October (when temperature is bit low). Since there is not much difference in temperatures during summers and winters in southern side of India comparing to northern side; crushing period increases, giving flexibility to the mill to crush the sugarcane when the crop has fully developed not only from October.

Hence, cooler climate ensures longer crushing season.
Hope i cleared ur doubt. 🙂

      1. 1. if crushing season starts from october then it is relatively warmer south which ensures longer crushing season !
        2. this is what my doubt is , your explanation is perfectly fine, but is this statement true ? as it is the moderating effect of sea which ensures longer growing period and crushing too , in summers temperatures are lower so cooler south and in winters relatively warmer south which keeps temp above 20 !
so is this statement correct ?

        1. crushing season starts from october means that this season requires a moderate climate i.e. not too hot and not too cold… october in north is of this type i.e. not too hot and not too cold.
similarly in south the temperature in moderate almost through out the year, hence the flexibility for crushing to happen any time during the year => ensures longer crushing season.

    2. Moisture content of the sugarcane drops steadily throughout its life. If the season is dry, sunny and cool, and frost free it is good for ripening and harvesting. All these conditions are more favourable in South.

Sugarcane also need cold night and clear skies, which is why highest productivity is found in Maharasthra.

Also, when the statement mentions ‘ideal location’ for growing sugarcane, it talks about all these factors. The statement should be seen in the context of the question. Thank you.

  55. @insights prelims test series
    Ques 4
Plz explain why the answer is d and not c……culturable wasteland is mentioned in ncert as uncultivated land for five years and not as uncultivable.

    1. Option C mentions it is not being used for ‘cultural’ reasons. 🙂 It is wrong.

  56. Hello friends, Could any one suggest revision strategy ? I am neglected this and paying the price! Even when i try to do so , it was consuming more time .

  60. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Strip cropping: option C also seems correct to me..coz in strip cropping soil erosion can be checked with alternative crops. Plz clarify it.

    1. No. The explanation is clear on this. 🙂 C is inter-cropping, not strip cropping.

      1. Q65) Commercial farming always differs from subsistence farming in
        – Issue with option 1 (Selection of crops) .. How do we deal such questions ? Do we have to look for exceptions ? I am generally it is ture.. had selection of crop was not a criterion, why we would have issue of commercialization of agriculture ?

        1. You should look for the keywords like ‘always’. Commercialization of agriculture is about mass production for market. The same crop can be grown for subsistence as well as commercial agriculture. Commercialization is not only about growing cash crops.

      2. and @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Please solve our queries. I still have pending doubts which you have ignored over again.

      3. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus: The definition NCERT has given is a general explanation of strip cropping, using the terms ‘strips of grasses left to grow between the crops”. It does not deny the correctness of the option C, i.e. ‘Cropping different crops in alternate rows to prevent soil erosion’. In fact, there are amply number of authentic sources that define Strip cropping as that in option C, including many government websites:

http://www.fao.org/ag/ca/AfricaTrainingManualCD/PDF%20Files/06CROP1.PDF (A manual by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation. It also differentiates between Strip farming and inter cropping)

        http://megapib.nic.in/soil_conservation_control.htm (A Meghalaya government document)

http://www.forests.ap.gov.in/GlosTech-S.htm (An Andhra Pradesh government document)

        http://www.keralaagriculture.gov.in/htmle/soils/soilconsr.htm (A Kerala government document)

Also, intercropping is not done with the purpose of checking soil erosion, but for utilizing the space and producing more grain per unit area. On the other hand, strip cropping, as the option C states, is done in order to check soil erosion. So, option C is a more better definition of Strip cropping.

  61. Dear sir,
Questions were asked from syllabus of test 5 i.e. from science 10 ncert. Please ask questions from mentioned syllabus.

  62. Please suggest me how to read 11th class biology… Are we supposed to remember a the Latin and scientific names?
    I’m worried
    Please help me out

    1. You should pick up what is relevant for UPSC and read them like a generalist.

      1. Regarding Question 39. Cooler climate is required for sugarcane ripening and subsequent crushing. But Southern India expecially Maharashtra is warm for nearly 9 to 10 months. So how could be the statement 2 be correct with respect to the question.
Question 64 asks about random wavering of “air” but the explanation deals with random wavering of “objects” in air.So what is right?Question 65 asks commercial farming ALWAYS differs from subsistence farming—-
Farm size is given as answer. Growth of cotton in Maharashtra and Gujarat is done by small and marginal farmers as well having less land but cotton is a commercial crop which is sold in market. So the word “always” in question is doubtful.
Question 73 answers accepts statement 2 to be correct bu the explanation says that alluvial soil could be found in rajasthan and Gujarat. So the answer and explanation are contradictory.Whats the truth?
Question 84 also states Government gives credit to farmers.I want to know that by which other ways does government give credit apart from banking channels?
Question 91 answer says that wood would emit heat and glow red but will not give flame after sometime as the volatile substance would vapourise. But when we again provide air by mouth,it provides the flame.why so?

        1. It can be used as a natural fertilizer. But, Bagasse is not used to ‘manufacture’ any fertilizer or chemical fertilizer. The question is about ‘manufactured’ fertilizers. Thank you.

          1. Can’t it be used to manufacture Organic Fertilizers ? I think organic fertilizers can also be manufactures to meet demand on large scale. A simple google search would be enough.
PS: I am least concerned with marks but not with concepts 🙂

            1. It is used in organic fertilizers. The reference in the question was to chemical fertilizers. It should have been more specific. Thank you.

    Mock Test 4, Q 30

Mica is one of the most important minerals used in electric and electronic industries due to its:
    1.Low power loss factor
2.Breakdown at high voltage to protect circuits
Which of the above is/are correct?

    A. 1 only
    B. 2 only
    C. Both 1 and 2
    D. None

As per the justification, Mica has excellent di-electric strength.
Thus, it will breakdown at high voltages and protect circuits. Hence, answer should be Both 1 and 2.

But you’ve provided it as 1 only.

  70. Strip cropping as defined by NCERT is Strips of grass are left to grow between the crops to break the force of wind.

But in many other sources it is defined as
Strip cropping is also a kind of agronomical practice in which ordinary crops are planted / grown in form of relatively narrow strips across the land slope. These strips are so arranged that the strip crops should always be separated by strips of close growing and erosion resistance crops.

Strip cropping or strip farming is defined as alternating crop rows between heavy-rooted plants and loosely-rooted plants to minimize erosion.
An example of strip cropping is planting a field with strips of soybean and alfalfa.

    Kindly Clarify

  71. Sir, please note this is with respect to the corrigendum for Q 32 Test 4 regarding vegetative propagation which predominantly and naturally involves single plant.
Examples of cutting and layering are artificial methods and unlike grafting, it involves only one plant. So how can grafting alone be considered while choosing the answer? I’ve referred the link below.
