  1. when will u start providing montly compilation of secure 2016.. will u provide or that was false promise..

        1. sry for that but you are not studying in KG that every thing will be serve you. civil services is a platform for serious and laborious challenges so if you not able to do so leave it. More on they are doing lots of things and you are not only alone, so if can not praise some one’s such hard work don’t blame allegations also.

          1. Hey man,

“sry for that but you are not studying in KG that every thing will be serve you.”
            ^ I agree with this

“civil services is a platform for serious and laborious challenges so if you not able to do so leave it.”
^ do not be so harsh either. Not fair on your part to advice co-aspirants to quit.

“More on they are doing lots of things and you are not only alone”
^I agree with the first part, but what does the second part mean?

“so if can not praise some one’s such hard work don’t blame allegations also.”
No idea if Tashvin has not praised Insights’ work. Tashvin has certainly not praised Insights in this thread, but that does not mean Tashvin has never been thankful for what Insights has done so far.

As for the blaming part, yeah I do agree that it’s almost never fair to blame others, and especially in this issue that Tavlin has raised.

            1. sry for such harsh words, if it hurts .I am deleting the post. But such thoughts needs introspection, it will be beneficial for him only

              1. Why do you want to delete it? Deleting such messages reflects your guilt.

Such thoughts need introspection, but being harsh is of no use according to me. It only makes things worse.

  2. Great one..Exhausted after the exam..Please try to include more old Qs, those are very helpful for revision

    1. Hey srp, I think you have enrolled for the preliminary test series. After 7th test I am not able to download test/answer papers’ PDF. I also asked insights about it but they didn’t reply yet.
I just want to know is it just me who is facing the problem ???

        1. Hey SRP can you please send the test series pdf papers from the beginning.I dont have the cash to register for insight test series. But i’ve reall passion for writing the exam. Can u do a favour, that will be great help for me

            1. Could u please send the 13th and 14th prelim test series paper to my email.email id is :arunjacob2016@outlook.com

  3. Hi, can anyone please suggest the sources to study world history ( for mains)?

Wiki has a lot of factual info which at times irrelevant for the exam and takes away from the already limited time.
And if NCERT, then which one(s)?

Inputs from the insights community will be highly appreciated!

    P.s Some Additional Doubts:

    i) Too many sources in test series : Most successful candidates suggest ‘limited sources, multiple revisions’ strategy
For instance History, I’d already read Spectrum’s BRIEF HISTORY OF MODERN INDIA
(should i read all these sources or repeat)

In the series there are so many sources in such limited time and NO PLAN FOR REVISION

What are you guys doing here?

    ii) OPTIONAL: SOCIOLOGY
I’d really appreciate help in sources for specific topics so that i don’t end up reading the entire Haralambos (too vast)

    HELP!

    1. I’ve trying to get insights to reply but to no avail. My mails have been ignored
(might be the bulk of mails that they have to go through but it’s really taking a toll on my prep)

    2. if in delhi buy baliyan notes they are more than enough … else read ncerts that will solve the mains prblm
Arjun dev history of the world and the new ncerts apart from it selective reading of topics from internet

    3. Hi Raj,

You can refer Old NCERTs (9th, 10th and 12th) to cover World History in one go. Otherwise, new NCERTs (9th, 10th and 11th) and Norman Lowe should be the second best preferences.

For History, stick to any one source. Spectrum is good. We don’t recommend it for freshers as it is written like notes and not a book. Out of all the reference books given in the schedule, apart from NCERTs, stick to any one book. Plassey to Partition would be better.

We have been including revision questions since last few tests. Test 13 is a revision test. Then, Test 24 onwards are all revision tests. Prepare well. Thank you. 🙂

      1. Thank you so much for the reply, Insights!
Just one thing, does it mean we have to choose ONE out of Bipin Chandra and Plassey to Partition in the upcoming tests
        or prepare both?

Also, is Spectrum as an alternative or a supplement to the above two?

        1. Spectrum is an alternative to these two. It covers most issues covered by Bipin Chandra and Old NCERTs. For the Tests, you may stick to any one out of Bipin Chandra or Plassey to Partition or Spectrum. 🙂

  4. Tough paper sirji..10-15 question were on International Bodies/organisation which was not mentioned in syllabus. That’s good move.
    Scored very low

    1. Dear, they were all from syllabus – 12th NCERT : Contemporary World Politics book. Prepare well for the next test. All the best. 🙂

  5. For question of European union option (a) i.e political union is considered false. But I think EU is politico-economic union. then why this option is wrong

    1. I think because it simply says political union which EU is not..either economic or political-economic must be correct as basis of formation of union is economic majorly..anyways let insights explain it then we will come to know

    2. Dear, it is not a political union. If it was, it would first have a common constitution and a common government which would severely restrict the autonomy of individual EU states. EU does have a Parliament, but still there is a lot to go before it can become a full political union.

  6. @Insightsias
Thank you dear insitsias team. all you guys are so nice. you understand the requirement of students and upsc. i have received 2015 question paper .
due to of your test series and strategy my performance is improving (Mains and Pre). i am following your lead towards success assiduously.

thanks a lot to you all.

  7. q.21-whether sangeet kala akademi and sangeet natak akademi are same?I didnt mark it highest as i thought kala must be highest?
Q.27 role of 8 ministries are missing in solution…so kindly provide it
Q.38. Yom Kippur war has not been explained in solution..instead probotics have been explained there..please provide the explanation
General-please give some tips to prepare “National Parks, Biosphere Reserves, Species, Environmental Laws/Conventions/Treaties/Bodies “..source and method…
    thank you

    1. 21. It is actually Lalit Kala Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akdemi. 🙂

27 and 38. It was included in the solution. It may not be displayed due to some technical errors. Please go through this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashta_Pradhan#Composition

Yom Kippur war – It is also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, fought by the coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel.

The military combat actions during the war mostly took place in the Sinai and the Golan Heights, territories that were occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967.

Egypt and Syria wanted to regain the Sinai and the Golan Heights respectively. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat wanted also to reopen the Suez Canal. Neither specifically planned to destroy Israel, although the Israeli leaders could not be sure of that.

Please also refer to the featured comment. Thank you.

  8. How am i suppose to know total no of students appeared and the score of the topper. This is my first test, so please sorry for the ignorance. Thanks.

    1. go to results on the homepage of the test site..u will get there but results of today will be visible in next test..rankings+number of people appeared

  9. I wanted to generally suggest that please include 3-4 questions in every test regarding various reports of international organisations such as World Bank and IMF etc.And also include the inclusions, exclusions, member and observer countries of various international groups.
I am making this suggestion as UPSC has been focussing a lot on these type of questions.Along with this, one or two map related questions will be an add on as we will compelled to have a look at it regularly.
I hope that that insights team will give a thought to my suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

  10. Insights!
As the Ques. 28 relates to the reports published by different organisations, forums ,etc. So, can you ppl provide us the Compilation of important Organizations with their Important Annual,Biennial, or the relevant Reports published.
It will lighten our burden 😉

    1. Presently, it is not possible for us to do so. You should go through the Ministry of External Affairs website and filter out important treaties/bodies/reports/agreements from there. If you do some basic research and make short notes on them, it will be enough. Thank you. 🙂

      1. Insights
I am unable to download test series PDF. I tried many times but couldn’t.
Please consider my problem. What is the issue??
        Please help me sir.

      2. Sir, I am unable to download test series PDF don’t know what is the issue. Tried many times but couldn’t.
Pls let me know sir what is the problem.

  11. Dear Insight request to clarify the following :
Question no. 57 :Madam cama unfurled national flag at stuttgart (germany) and not paris. Hence, if we eliminate options answer should be D and not B.

  12. For Test 13, can you please suggest some links or material for “National Parks, Biosphere Reserves, Species, Environmental Laws/Conventions/Treaties/Bodies”?

    1. Suggested Material for Test 13:

      1. Please combine these sources for Environment portion:

      a) Ministry of Environment and Forests website

      b) Important Protected Areas from Wikipedia, UPSC Past year papers (pick list and do some research) and all endangered State animals.

Here is a useful booklet from MoEF on critically endangered species of India.

      http://www.moef.nic.in/downloads/public-information/critically_endangered_booklet.pdf

      2. For International Bodies/Treaties etc.

A thorough reading of NCERT -12th Contemporary World Politics and some research on the International Bodies given therein will do. We have already covered many such important bodies/treaties in these tests.

Apart from this Ministry of External Affairs website is a one stop source. Current affairs and past year papers are also very important here. Filter important topics/bodies/treaties from there. Little bit of research on them will do.

For such topics, unfortunately no good single source is available.

      Prepare well. Thank you. 🙂

      1. Sir please can tell me how to attempt questions like Camphor (Q17)… there is no dearth of information.
and also about National Park, at least one statement confuses which makes difficult to select the right option. Can you please guide me.

  13. Dear insights test series team,

I have also submitted this request through the feedback on the test series portal.

I had requested for relative rankings. I request you to also include the “out of how many students” in the ranking system. Because in my opinion absolute ranking doesn’t give us the actual picture of ourselves that where do we stand. E.g. let’s say I got a rank of 222 in a test. But this could be out of 250 or 500 or 1000. So either give in terms of %ile or give ranks in the form of 222/500.

      1. I think Mayank has made an excellent suggestion. I guess he has asked for the total number of participants to be updated every time a new guy attends a particular test after the closure date, ie commencement of next test. It would be nice to provide us with the updated total number of participants, along with the updated individual rank you already provide on the dashboard. Thank you 🙂

    1. click on results tab on test series page…u will get to know how many aspirants gave the exam

  14. @InsightsOnIndia:disqus
This is regarding the yearbook … I already have the 2015 edition .. Should i buy 2016 also ?

    1. If you have regularly followed important affairs of the year 2015, you need not buy the 2016 India Yearbook. They usually add last one year developments in addition to what already exists in the book. 🙂

    1. don’t be… remember if paper is difficult for you it is for every one. So don’t loose hope keep practice. And this time paper is quite tough so low scoring is quite natural. In fact I also only able to attempt 45 questions.

    2. Even I get the same feeling 🙂 Nothing to worry about. It should only act as a checkpoint and you should start preparing with double the vigour.
Try to keep negatives in check when faced with such a situation because its the negatives which will be the game changers

  15. Insights….Need your help on couple of topics.
Please provide link or website(understandable) that is regularly updated from where I can learn about :-
    (a) Tribes/ Festivals.
    (b) International Organizations/ Treaties… Learning here there in bits and pieces is troublesome.
    (c) Vulnerable/Endangered/Very Endangered Species.. It is really difficult to capture in whole. And everyday there are additions, subtractions.

    1. (a) Only those are important that have been asked in UPSC Previous year papers or in NCERT or are frequently in news (e.g. Jarawas). Selective study will do. Anyways we will be covering most of them.

      (b) A thorough reading of NCERT -12th Contemporary World Politics and some research on the International Bodies given therein will do. Apart from this Ministry of External Affairs website is a one stop source. Again, current affairs and past year papers are very important here.

      (c) This booklet can help, but it contains only critically endangered species. http://www.moef.nic.in/downloads/public-information/critically_endangered_booklet.pdf

For the rest, selectively study state animals (endangered), species covered in past year papers and Insights Tests are very important. Unfortunately there is no single source for this. Prepare well. Thank you.

  16. Hi
    Q 22 :

Need more insights in to the procedure of creation of new ministries and merger of existing ministires

New – Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge)

Merger – Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) with the Ministry of External Affairs

    1. As per the felt need, the bureaucrats or the Council of Ministers advise the Prime Minister for creation of new ministries or their merger.

The PM herself can take the initiative and advises the President for the same.

The formal approval is given by the President only who is authorized to create or merge Ministries in the Government of India.

  17. sir regarding q: 72 was pedana fabric too awarded the Indian handloom tag or is it just chettinad cotton! According to the given answer it is both pedana fabric and chettinad cotton but in explanation you have just mentioned about chettinad cotton which was recently given the tag! please clarify on this! 18. Dear sir,
sorry to ask it here. Is the refund for the 2016 test series has been credited mailed you in this regard but no reply.

  19. Q92 . Book say and I Quote ” The European Union has evolved over time from an economic union to an increasingly political one. The EU has started to act more as a nation state.” So should it be considered a political union

    1. No, it cannot be considered to be a political Union.

EU neither has a common constitution, nor an overarching government. They do not even have a common fiscal policy. EU states are completely autonomous in most matters. They do have an EU Parliament, but it cannot even initiate legislation on its own.

If we take the example of India as a political Union, EU is still far away from realizing the status of a political Union. But, with the recent economic and political reforms in EU (largely due to high debt and economic slowdown), EU is getting closer and closer to being a political union.

  20. Dear Insight request to clarify the following :

Question no. 57 :Madam cama unfurled national flag at stuttgart (germany) and not paris. Hence, if we eliminate options answer should be D and not B.

  21. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Sir, websites of ministries are so vast and I am really confused on what actually should we read from them. Plz provide some detailed strategy for studying the websites in an understandable way cuz some websites use a little bit difficult language that sometimes gets hard to interpret.
    Hope a reply from ur side…… 🙂

    1. Hey @BST , Why did you stop posting the daily GS topics ? Was enjoying that exercise … It provoked me to think and was a wonderful way of revision .. Kindly start that :p

        1. eh ? I just checked your profile … It shows your last post (for GS Topics) was a month ago :p

          1. Posted in questions on current events. Do check it…..by the way I said yesterday that I did not stop but gave it a break cuz of time constraints ..:)

  22. Dear Insights,

As already pointed out by @disqus_QnwPwEfyu7:disqus, the link provided for Q72. mentions, “Pedana fabric that includes those with Kalamkari designs has been RECOMMENDED for the Indian Handloom Brand to promote it across the globe” ..

The latest article on this from the Hindu is dated February 9th, 2016 which also says something similar: “A Pedana-made fabric, which is woven with yarn dyed with natural colours, is BEING CONSIDERED for the status of Indian Handloom Brand tag”

(Sorry for all the capital letters) 😛

    1. It is a mistake from our side. Please erase Paris from the statement and then answer it. 🙂

        1. On wikipedia, “By 1902, Calcutta had three societies working under the umbrella of Anushilan Samity. These included a society earlier founded by a Calcutta student named
          Satish Chandra Basu
with the patronage of a Calcutta barrister by the name of
          Pramatha Mitra,
another led by a Bengalee lady by the name of
          Sarala Devi,
          and a third one founded
          Jatindranath Bannerjee and Aurobindo Ghosh-
the latter one of the strongest proponents of militant nationalism of the time

  23. Great test Insights! It is tests like these which act as a reality check and push us to work harder. The previous 3 tests were relatively easy and I was expecting a somewhat tough paper. The questions were brilliant. I wouldnt be surprised if we get a couple of these questions in the actual examination. Keep the good work on!

  24. sir for question no 6, regarding buddhist monasteries you have mentioned that it is from here UPSC has lifted the question but dint mention it ! can you please tell us from where did UPSC lifted the question! just curious to know!

  25. hey syllabus mentioned for test 12 was CSP papers of 2006-07, but many questions asked were from CSP- 2009. Please tell exact syllabus regarding previous year papers for test 13.

    refer to Q.14
The explantion says PM is member of NWRC but option 3 is incorrect. since PM is chariman of niti ayog “3” should be correct

  28. @@insightsprelimstestseries:disqus i request you to provide pdf of all previous tests after correction of the mistakes in them..there are many wrong answers, explanation etc which will cost heavily in upsc prelims. i understand there can be human errors….but not rectifying it is really dangerous……u promise to rectify them but u dont and ur busy schedule make students forget it…..i request u to consider it and act accordingly…

  34. @ I think the answer to question no. 14 should be D and not A as the chairman of NITI Ayog is the PM who is also the member of NWRC. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

  35. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Q.14 asks Which among the following is/are member(s) of the National Water Resources Council
(NWRC)? The solution shows the correct answer to be option A which is CMs of all states and union minister of water resources, however the union minister is the vice-chairman and not a member. If we consider the vice-chairman to be a member then shouldn’t the chairman(PM- who is also the chairman of NITI Aayog) be also included as a member?

  36. Q-92 – EU- “The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe”. Wikipedia. Hence, option 1 should also be correct.

  37. Dear Insights plz verify q12 again. Acc to Ncert books Contemporary world politics chapter -6, page – 85, ILO is agency of UNECOSOC. But answer is different.

    1. Specialized agencies are autonomous organizations working with the United Nations and each other through the coordinating machinery of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. So, ILO is not a sub-agency of UNECOSOC. 🙂

      1. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus
