    1. You need not read Microeconomics book. Please read all chapters of the 12th Standard NCERT “Introductory Macroeconomics” book.

  1. Hi Insights,
The test was pretty interesting and challenging to solve. Seems like the paper setters have mastered UPSC’s double back breaking move 😀
Do up the difficulty level after every two or three tests to give the test takers a thorough shakedown 😉

    1. Lokayatas and Ajivikas differ in their fundamental conception of the Universe.

As per the Lokayats, no God, soul or supra-natural entity exists. For them the Universe is purely materialist, i.e. consisting of only matter, even human beings. For them, whatever exists and can be observed only is the truth. So, for them the reality is that humans are formed from matter, live their lives and decompose thereafter alongwith their senses.

As per the Ajivikas, there is an intelligent design behind the Universe, and it is not just a random play of matter. They believe soul and consciousness exist, and all things in the Universe flow from a certain law. Now if you fix that law, then eventually everything will be a fallout or manifestation of the law. So, they believed that all things in the Universe are predecided based on the Universal law and man is not just an assemblage of matter.

        1. Consciousness is the background of all our experiences. It is awareness.

It is the screen on which the movie of our lives is run. When the screen is off, no experiences can be registered even though they occur around you, for example when you are in deep sleep. Without your consciousness, the world wouldn’t exist for you.

It the experience or awareness of “I” that we carry in day to day living without even noticing it. Just like a fish never feels the water distinctly from itself, we don’t feel the consciousness distinct from us.

  2. q41. Surface salinity of ocean water one.
I agree that thawing of large freshwater icebergs will decrease the salinity but please explain how actual freezing of seawater will increase the salinity temporarily?

    1. The freezing and thawing of ice also affects salinity. The thawing of large icebergs (made of frozen fresh water and lacking any salt) will decrease the salinity while the actual freezing of seawater will increase the salinity temporarily. This temporary increase happens in the first stages of the freezing of seawater when small ice crystals form at about minus 2 degrees Centigrade. These tiny, needle-like ice crystals are frozen freshwater and the salts are not part of them so the liquid between these crystals becomes increasingly salty to the point of it being a brine. Eventually though, as seawater freezes, the ice crystals trap areas with brine and the entire large piece of frozen seawater (ice floe) is salty.

  3. q93
Article 39 DPSP talks about equal pay for equal work which has been enforced by Equal Remuneration Act of 1976…
So is the option b ” Men and women MGNREGA workers get the same salary” right in that aspect?…it is not an instance of an exercise of a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution

    1. It is both an exercise of fundamental right and Directive Principles of State Policy.

This is from archive.india.gov.in: “The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 aims to provide for the payment of equal remuneration to men and women workers and for the ‘prevention of discrimination’, on the ground of sex, against women in the matter of employment and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.”

Not giving MGNREGA male and female workers the same salary can fall under the violation of fundamental right under Article 15 of the constitution.

  4. Great test @Insights! though I did not perform as well as my past two tests. Since I joined late I have a hard time covering the previous tests’ syllabus. Revision is a good idea, but it would be better for latecomers like me if you guys could give the revision portion schedule as well. For example, for the next test, say you add a revision portion of test 1,2,3 (plus the regular portion). You can plan it such that all the portion gets revised once before the full length test starts, but please consider giving revision portion for latecomers. Please consider this option!!

      1. @Insights Prelims Test Series:disqus Thanks! Also please inform the added revision portion as soon as possible, if you are implementing it (you can guess I’m pretty serious about tests :D), else I will just divide up the portion myself and study such that I get good marks at least after full length tests start..

      2. Please consider it sir, otherwise it will b very difficult to finish the entire ncert syllabus with in 10 days before the full length test.

  5. HI Insight the test was good and challenging, I really felt the same pressure of IAS prelims Exam Halll. even though I joined late, some how I managed to secure 267 rank, my confidence has got increased, 1 would like to give 1 more suggesstion why dont you add 3-5 tests purely on Cuerrent affairs syllabus should cover 3-months it will ultimately add some more weightage to the test series you can cover in that which you have not included in the test series, Please do consider this suggestion it will be a greate help.

    Thanks Insight.

  6. for ques no. 76 please explain where mica is found in the South-Western plateau region. the explanation given in the pdf doesnot say much.

    1. If Mica is being extracted from mines at large scale, it can be considered to be available in commercially viable quantities.

In the South-western plateau Mica does occur, but the plateau is not a major producer of Mica. If the question specifically mentions ‘commercial extraction’, then the above should be considered.

  7. Confused about Q.31. Since Weight per unit volume of refined products (densities of petrol, diesel, kerosene oil, etc.) are less than that of crude oil, So Can’t it be called a weight loosing industry? Please clear my doubt!

    1. “Weber categorized the raw materials as
‘pure’ and ‘weight losing’. Pure materials impart their total weight to
the products (eg. cotton, wool, etc) and the materials are said to be
‘weight losing’ if only a part enters into the product (eg. wood, coal,
etc.). Hence, the location of industries using weight-losing materials
is drawn towards their deposits and that of industries using
pure-materials towards the consumption centre.” ……. So, In case of crude oil, as we know large number of products are manufactured using EVERY BIT OF IT, so I think it shouldn’t be weight losing one. This is what I feel 🙂 Let Insights reply..

  8. I dont understand why there is always some problem, either before starting the test or something between or after the test… Right now i took 30mins. to first open the site, then login also took alot of time..then when i clicked on start test there was just a blank screen like in the pic and that meant my time was started. So will i be able to give the test again. Please Improve. Need a Reply,Insights

  9. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus I found statements in Q.no 58 to be gender-sensitive and for a change , towards men.

  10. Insights please mention the sources of following topics:
    1) world war I and related events –
    2) Russian revolution and communism-
    3) Anti Semitism-
    4) Spanish civil war-
    5) the holocaust-
    6) Redrawal of national boundaries during Two World wars-

        1. They already did mention the same in the pdf in which the entire schedule of test series and topics were given…I am just quoting what insights had already quoted.

        1. Norman Lowe covers history starting from WW-I upto the Arab Spring. For colonization and industrial revolution you will have to read Arjan Dev(old NCERT). Some aspects are covered in the new NCERTs of Std IX and Xth as well. You can also rely on wikipedia entries for the same

    1. 9th, 10th and 12th Old NCERTs and some research on internet will do. If not, then Normal Lowe alone would be sufficient. If you don’t have any of these, then 9th, 10th and 11th world history from New NCERTs and some internet research. 🙂

      1. Being a fresher, I am confused of doing selective search of topics. So, I have decided to study complete Norman Lowe and in support of those topics which are mentioned above, I will study from wikipedia/ Internet.

  11. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus With regard to question number 77 , the only difference between a tornado ,cyclone and a hurricane is where they occur geographically and not exclusive phenomenon per se. Then how can a tornado form inside a cyclone ?

      1. Sir according to article cyclones may provide condition for generation of tornado after they make landfall. But question says tornados are formed within cyclone. Isn’t tornado is formed after cyclone die out and not when it is active. Please clarify

  12. Does anyone have the pdf copies of Plassey to Partition and Modern India ? Can’t buy the books now.

  13. test 10 involves a question of Aurora (no.3).
A logical thing is that if we say that it is caused by interaction of SOLAR WIND with NITROGEN & OXYGEN, it would probably be seen on every part of earth and not on high latitudes as is evident now because nitrogen and oxygen is homogeneously present on earth on every part of it.
Infact according to Wikipedia and other sources it is due to interaction of SOLAR WIND with MAGNETOSPHERE present in high latitudes as convergence of magnetic fields in polar regions.
    If wrong kindly correct me!

  14. test 10 involves a question of Aurora (no.3).

    1. The logic is correct but with a correction. Charged particles from solar wind are largely deflected by earth due to its magnetic field due to which auroras are not formed everywhere on earth.

But, at poles the magnetic field is weak. Thus the interaction of magnetosphere with solar wind produces aurora when solar wind can react with gases like nitrogen and oxygen without being deflected. This interaction is what produces the beautifully coloured light. 🙂

      1. I thought magnetic field at poles is stronger than other places such as equator thats why we see aurora at Higher latitudes. Please clarify

      2. So can it be called that it is due to Magnetosphere prioritisingly more than Nitrogen and oxygen?

  24. HI @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus,

Since you have already published the rankings for last nine exams. I would like to know, Is it possible if you can make at-least first 5 paper available for one more attempt. So that we can practice.

I must say, without revision practice, I feel preparation is incomplete.

    Let us know.

    Thanks in advance !

  25. Sir will you update the syllabus timetable on The SCHEDULE section of the website once Economic survey and India yearbook comes ? Or only students who have paid 6000 can only see which Chapters will you mention ?

      1. Hehe . I will join Sir . Just trying to finish up all the NCERTs and then enroll and start with your all NCERT Test . And then follow your strategy for Reference Books and give tests . Will rely on your strategy only this year , Sir , for its my First Attempt . Since your strategy will be covering Laxmikanth , CCRT , Eco Survey , India Yearbook , DD Basu , Bipin Chandra , Shekhar Bandhopadyay , Sumit Sarkar , Ramesh Singh , Environment Studies , GC Leong …. and a repository of 3200 questions to attempt and revise . Hopefully all this would lead to a huge success on 7th August 2016 . 😀

  27. Crop yield of Jowar increases South of Vindhyachal as it becomes an irrigated crop

    there.

Can anyone tellme where is Vindyachal??(Is it the same as Vindhyas)?

  28. Ajivikas have been described as fatalists in the NCERT Book on Pg 87. —– Why is the answer given different???

    1. Answer is not different. It is the same. Ajivikas are fatalists.

Fatalists believe everything is predetermined by fate. Ajivikas attribute this to manifestation of pre-existing universal laws. The explanation in the PDF addresses the same.

      1. sir, in q 20, arsenic’s concentration increases due to pollution from a source then how is it related to decreasing ground water level?

        1. Arsenic naturally occurs in deeper layers of groundwater. If the borewells continuously extract water deeper and deeper, the withdrawn water becomes polluted with Arsenic.

  34. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus Doubt in next test syllabus – macroeconomics class 12th, last chapter – open economy. page number 16 (starting from first page of chapter). Please explain the concept of Y_tb and Y_star. Y_tb is where net exports is zero, before it there is trade surplus, after that trade deficit. Y_star is defined as the equilibrium of supply and demand of domestic goods. I don’t understand the way its shown in graphs.

    1. The graphs are for those who would like to pursue undergraduate courses in Economics later. An aspirant need not understand them.

Concepts are important and one should be thorough with them.

  37. Sir, I understand that you don’t want many people to share single test series account, that is why you don’t have the option to retake the test. But before we start the final tests (from test 24 onwards), I would like to be able to retake all the previous tests.

And by the way, I just went to a book shop in karol bagh the other day, all your tests and daily current affairs are being sold. I am sure that is a revenue loss for you.

And we need the 2015 prelims test series. It is not yet downloadable.

    Thanks and regards.

  38. Hi @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus I am also giving Mains Test series. I was disappointed to note that some important portions were completely left out of test like American Revolution, Industrial revolution. Please give questions on all chapters so that everything is effectively revised.

  42. Hi Sir,
Q23. Statement 3 – “High weed growth shows that the land is still productive but not
    maintained.”
So should this not be considered as culturable wasteland? Pls reply..
    Thank you

    1. There is a difference between ‘Wastelands’ and ‘culturable wastelands’. The latter is called ‘culturable’ for the reason that they can be brought under cultivation by land improvement. So, statement 3 is only a culturable wasteland, not a wasteland. The question is about wastelands. Thank you.

  43. 12 The Young Bengal Movement by Louis Vivian Derozio did NOT

    A. Encourage its followers to question all authority

    B. Demand education for women

    C. Campaign for the freedom of thought and expression

    D. Promote the ideal of salvation through social service and selfless action

User Answer : Correct Answer : D Answer Justification :

Justification: Option (d) was the path of the Ramakrishna Mission.

The Young Bengal movement was a group of radical Bengali free thinkers emerging

    from Hindu College, Calcutta.

The Young Bengals were inspired and excited by the spirit of free thought and revolt against the existing social and religious structure of Hindu society.

    Is this correct ?

    1. The Young Bengal Movement was not inclined towards spiritually ‘enlightening’ people, or taking them towards salvation. Free thought and social radicalism are different things. Option D is the clear answer.

  44. In test 11 (the discussion forum is not working there), Q. 63 – the answer is investment expenditure (as also explained there), but the one given is D (transfer payments). Kindly correct it.

    1. It is due to a technical glitch. The correct answer must be B – investment Expenditure. Thank you.

  45. @insightsprelimstestseries:disqus sir does 11th test will also include syllabus of previous tests?

      1. 23.waste land definition – an unused area of land that has become barren or overgrown(google)
So shouldn’t land with weed growth will come under this? What to do with productivity when something is not being used remains of no use at that point of time. Resources which have not exploited remains of no use although they have potential.

        1. But its not impossible to cultivate such land . On steep hill u can’t cultivate as water will drown away or due to soil erosion that area consider as non cultivable.

        2. A wasteland cannot be brought under cultivation, or brought under cultivation only after suffering exorbitant costs.

There is a difference between ‘unexploited’ resources and ‘unexploitable’ resources. A barren land would come under the latter, but a land with weed growth would come under the former.

    1. You should g through past year UPSC papers to understand the kind of questions that are asked and then focus on only the relevant concepts in the book. 🙂
