1) What do you understand by the domino theory. Discuss what impact it had on the world politics in the twentieth century.(250 words)

Reference

Why this question

The theory was used as a rationale for American interventions, including most disastrously the intervention in the Vietnam War.Thus it becomes important for us to know about the key points and the impact of the theory so that any further discussion can be taken thereupon.

Directive word

Discuss- this is an all-encompassing directive which mandates us to write in detail about the key demand of the question. we also have to discuss about the related and important aspects of the question in order to bring out a complete picture of the issue in hand.

Key demand of the question.

The question wants us to write in detail about the domino theory and also discuss at length about the impact had on world politics in the 20th century.

Structure of the answer

Introduction– Write a few introductory lines about the domino theory E.g THE DOMINO THEORY states that if one vital country in a region falls to an expansionist negative philosophy, then other countries in the region similarly situated and similarly structured would fall victim to the same philosophy, either through force or through influence of example.

Body

Discuss the domino theory in further detail E.g In its pure form, the negative philosophy is communism but in variants it can be socialism or theocratic Islam, The theory was used as a rationale for American interventions, including most disastrously the intervention in the Vietnam Wa; Liberal and conservative alike in an age of consensus about the evils of communism subscribed to the domino theory. They agreed that if the communists ever managed to take one country, then that country’s neighbors would fall one by one until none was left to the free world. This communist imperialism was what President Eisenhower referred to in April 1954 when discussing Indochina and the domino theory etc.

DIscuss the impact of the domino theory E.g The U.S. consensus was that all communist movements were part of the communist international, puppets of the Kremlin. Communism was a monolith, not a an idea, like democracy, that might arise in a nation independently of either the United States or the Soviet Union; The domino theory was the rationale for U.S. support for colonialist FRANCE and later dictatorial governments of South VIETNAM in Indochina against what it read as a communist insurgency compounded by a communist invasion; Although few of the original supporters of the theory still subscribe to it, some still justify military activism using the domino theory. Rather than communism, in the post-Cold War world, the threat is Islamic theocracy and the counterweight is liberal democracy in the Middle East. The theory applied during the Iran-Iraq War as a rationale for taking the side of IRAQ in order to prevent IRAN from spreading its radical theocracy in the Middle East etc.

Conclusion– based on your discussion, form a fair and a balanced conclusion on the given issue.

epw

Why this question

The scheduled Tribes form an important component of India’s population who are settled in areas where minerals are present, deep forests which are used for commercial purposes etc. The impact of India’s developmental journey on its tribal population is controversial and needs to be discussed in detail.

Key demand of the question

The question expects us to discuss the impact that the developmental projects undertaken in India such as dam construction, mineral exploration etc have had on the tribal population of India. We need to highlight both the good and the bad and discuss the way forward.

Directive word

Discuss – This is an all-encompassing directive – you have to debate on paper by going through the details of the issues concerned by examining each one of them. You have to give reasons for both for and against arguments.

Structure of the answer

Body

Introduction – Explain that most of rainfall is brought during monsoons and explain the two seasons.

Body – Explain the mechanism of retreating monsoon. The months of October-November form a period of transition from the hot rainy season to the dry winter conditions. Explain that the the retreat takes place due to the weakening of the low-pressure area over the north-western parts of India (and thus a gradual transition of ITCZ towards the south). This happens due to: The apparent shift of sun towards the equator, Reduction in temperature due to widespread rains.

Explain the areas where such rainfall occur and that likelihood of cyclones increases.

4) India’s active pursuit of nuclear-armed submarines undermines its stated international position and reflects a security assessment that is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Examine.(250 words)

The hindu

Directive word

Examine- here we have to probe deeper into the topic,  get into details, and find out the causes or implications if any.

Key demand of the question.

The question wants us to dig deep into the issue and bring out as the reasons as to why India’s active pursuit of nuclear-armed submarines undermines its stated international position and also why reflects a security assessment that is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Structure of the answer

Introduction

Write a few introductory lines about the topic E.g   India’s first indigenous ballistic-missile armed nuclear submarine (SSBN), successfully completed its first deterrence patrol” and it has been claimed that this “accomplishment” would “always be remembered in our history”.

Body

Discuss the reasons as to how India’s pursuit of nuclear powered SSBNs is against its internationally stated objectives. E.g India is not a signatory to either the NPT or the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), but did accede to the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in October 1963. India is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and four of its 17 nuclear reactors are subject to IAEA safeguards etc

Discuss how the pursuit is strategically misplaced and reflects  a security assessment that is becoming increasingly irrelevant. E.g nuclear-armed submarines increase the risks of an accidental conflict; the crew of a nuclear-armed submarine will have both the custody of nuclear weapons and the ability to launch them at short notice. Even though reports suggest that nuclear weapons on Indian SSBNs will be safeguarded by electronic switches, called “permissive action links”, such a setup can dangerously weaken the civilian command-and-control structure; Indian submarines will be smaller, and perhaps cheaper. However, even if their costs are only half as large as the lower end of the British and American estimates, the total cost of maintaining a fleet of four SSBNs, over a 40-year life cycle, will be at least ₹3 lakh crore etc; SSBNs were first deployed during the Cold War and justified as a tool of last resort. If an adversary were to launch a devastating first-strike on a country, destroying its land-based missiles and paralysing its air force, the submarine — undetected at sea — could still deliver a counter-strike, assuring the “mutual destruction” of both countries; India faces no such threat today; inability to help against the policy of tactical use of weapons by Pakistan etc.

Conclusion – Based on your discussion form a fair and a balanced conclusion on the given issue.

Topic – Inclusive growth and issues arising from it.
