Part-3 (With Answer Writing Screenshots and Diagrams)

Hello friends,

This is my 3rd article (1st Article and 2nd Article) regarding strategy for Anthropology Optional and overall 5th article (GS Articles – One and Two). We will be discussing extensively on Answer Writing. Let’s start then:

Art of Writing Answer

In this firstly we will talk about choosing the right kind of question (Scoring areas), followed by discussion on introduction, body and conclusion part.

  • Choosing Question in Examincation Hall:
    • Attempt questions from Static Areas: ( In general try to attempt two 50 markers from Physical and Biological anthropology in Paper-1 and Indian Social System and Prehistory in Paper-2)
      • Fossils
      • Primatology
      • Genetics
      • Applied Anthropology
      • Social Institutions in Paper-1
      • Indian Prehistory
      • Indian Social System concepts like Jajmani System, Sanskritization, Village studies.
    • Structuring of answers: Here I would like to highlight that we all need to make sure “Ease of Checking Answers” for examiner. Structuring of answer is all about to communicate examiner that concerned answer is written by well aware and intelligent write up answering exactly what was asked in the question.
      • Introduction: There are various ways of starting an answer:
        • Definition: This is one of the most common but most effective way to start an answer. Here I am repeating it again, make sure to mention the anthropologist who has given that particular definition and where he/she had given that concept in which year. For instance:

  • Interlinking with other subtopics: Try to interlink topics while starting an answer. For instance: linking archaeology with ecological anthropology, neo-evolutionism and cultural materialism

  • Body:
    • Subheadings: Try to write answers in the point format with subheadings to make it easy for examiner to evaluate answers.

  • Case-studies/examples:
    • Substantiate your answers with case studies, facts and figures. Do not forget to mention from which that particular substantiation is being given. Even one can quote research papers studies, EPW studies, Down to Earth Magazine, Frontline along with names of anthropologists/sociologists.
    • Underline: important points/facts to highlight in the answer
  • Diagrams: Make diagrams and flowchart as much as possible. Here I am attaching few of them:
    • Diffusionism:
    • Stages of cultural evolution given by Gordon childe
    • Nature-Man-Spirit complex
    • Sanskritization
    • Purushartha
    • Jajmani system
    • Jajmani system interlinkages
    • Soan Valley
    • Chopper/Chopping tool

  • Dental Arcade Evolution

  • Skull

  • Guha Racial Classification

  • Geographical Spread of Australopethicus

  • Impact of Gloablization on Indegenous Economic System

Marriage Payment System

  • Sister Exchange

  • Political System

  • Resdistribution System

  • Conclusion:
    • Application: of the particular concept in enhancing anthropological understanding of humans as well as society at large.
    • Opinion Based question: Communicate clearly the stand mentioning the substantiation mentioned in body concisely. For example : question on Aryan debate, Tribe v/s indigenous people
    • Recent happenings: While concluding the answers one can mention recent happening that are linked with core of the answer. For example let’s say question on Dominant Caste: one can mention recent reservation drives from dominant caste and why it is happening in a succinct manner.

Example: (25/30 Marker)

10 Marker

In the end I would conclude by saying, “No two individuals are same”. You may have a completely different strategy, book list, answer writing style which may be equally good or even better. If you find that comfortable, stick to it. But just ensure that complete syllabus is covered in sufficient depth and have adequate speed to complete the paper. I hope, these three long articles might be tiring for you while reading but I have tried to cover every aspect extensively .I just hope that it will help you in scoring good marks in Anthropology.

I will be writing articles further as well. Till then, Goodbye and Wish you all the best!
