- NGT imposes complete ban on certain plastic items in towns located along Ganga river including Haridwar and Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a complete ban on use; sale, purchase and storage of plastic items such as carry bags, plates and spoons along the river Ganga in Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri and Rishikesh till upper areas of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand.
- The move was taken to tackle and prevent pollution of the Ganga.
- The NGT passed the direction after noting that despite its earlier order, plastic was being used in these areas causing pollution to the river.
- Two day national workshop on the role of One Stop Centres-Sakhi
Minister for Women and Child Development inaugurated a two day national workshop on the role of One Stop Centres-Sakhi in strengthening multi sectoral response to violence.
- One Stop Centres, OSCs are designed to help the victims as in most of the cases of violence women hesitate to file complaint because of fear.
- There are large number of women who, even rape, they won’t complaint because of fear. So 51 percent of the population is now un-represented because they are frightened.
OSCs will prove beneficial for rape victims in the rural areas as they are unaware of whom to approach. Once the case is registered, police will look into the case on the behalf of OSC and lawyer will represent the victim free of cost and will be paid by OSC.
- Prime Minister dedicates the 60 Mega Watt Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project to the Nation
Prime Minister will dedicate the 60 Mega Watt Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project to the Nation at Aizawl in Mizoram.
The Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project has been constructed as a Central Sector Project and implemented by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) which is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Power.

Tuirial dam is an earthfill and gravity dam, currently under construction on the Tuirial River in the state of Mizoram.
- Maharashtra Government to adopt Clinical establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act
Maharashtra Government has started efforts to adopt Clinical establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act with an aim to ensure the minimum standards of facilities and services provided by them.
The draft Clinical Establishment Bill has been pending in the state since 2010 due to opposition from medical fraternity.
This bill will pave way to control unethical practices adopted by some of the private hospitals.
Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010
It seeks to regulate all clinical establishments in India. The Act requires all clinical establishments to register themselves and provides a set of standard treatment guidelines for common diseases and conditions.
- The state governments must adopt the law by passing a resolutionin the legislative assemblies. The states have the choice of passing a resolution to adopt the bill or passing a similar bill.
- The aim of the Act is to register all clinical establishments in India to make it easier to regulate them and implement standard practices.
- With the exception of the establishments under the military forces, all public and private establishments, including AYUSHestablishments, are required to register.
- Union Cabinet clears proposed bill to make instant triple talaq void and illegal
The Union Cabinet approved the proposed Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 which seeks to make instant triple talaq void and illegal.
The bill is designed to provide a shield for Muslim women. The bill will be introduced in the current session of Parliament.
Continuation of National AYUSH Mission till March 2020
The Cabinet also gave its approval for continuation of centrally sponsored scheme of National AYUSH Mission from April 2017 to March 2020.
The scheme is being implemented by the Central government to provide cost effective AYUSH services.
2,600 crore rupees special package for leather and footwear sector
It cleared 2,600 crore rupees special package for leather and footwear sector. The package has potential to generate 3.24 lakh jobs in three years and assist in formalisation of two lakh jobs as cumulative impact in the sector. The scheme would lead to development of infrastructure for the leather sector, address environmental concerns and facilitate additional investments, job creation and production.
Nod for continuation of non-lapsable central pool of resources scheme for North-Eastern region
The government gave its nod for continuation of non-lapsable central pool of resources scheme for North-Eastern region till March 2020 with an outlay of 5,300 crore rupees.
It also cleared introduction of another initiative-North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme from 2017-18. The scheme is aimed at filling up the gaps in creation of infrastructure in specified sectors.
National Medical Commission Bill, 2017
The Cabinet also approved National Medical Commission Bill, 2017.
- It will replace the Medical Council 1956 Act and enable a forward movement in medical education reform.
- It is a move towards outcome based regulation of medical education rather than process oriented.
- Opening up the medical education sector will lead to significant addition in the number of Undergraduate and Post-graduate seats and substantial new investment in this infrastructure sector.
