  1. International Film Festival of India​ begins in Goa this evening; Around 200 films from over 80 countries to be screened.

The 48th International Film Festival of India​(IFFI) begins at Goa’s capital Panaji. During the nine-day extravaganza, around 200 films from over 80 countries will be screened.

  • This year,​Canada is the focus country and will be presenting a package of its 8 best recent films.
  • Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the festival. Here is a report:

 

  1. In Jammu and Kashmir, one hundred ninety militants killed in various anti militancy and counter infiltration operations this year.

190 militants have been killed in various anti-militancy and counter infiltration operations by the joint command of security forces in the Kashmir Valley till now this year.

  • Among 190 militants, 80 were locals and 66 were killed along the Line of Control while trying to infiltrate.
  • Local militants who want to return to their home will be provided all facilities to lead a normal life. The reports on Islamic State group presence in the valley are also being verified.

  • The government is committed to providing the best road infrastructure to people of the state.
  • The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office said 2,600 crore rupees have been sanctioned for consolidating the road network in the Kathua-Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

  • The 42nd World Congress of the International Committee of Military Medicine is taking place in India for the first time.
  • The congregation will deliberate on a broad range of issues, including terrain specific military medical support and protection of health in a military environment.
  • The theme of the five-day event is ‘Military Medicine in Transition: Looking Ahead’.

 

  1. Cold wave conditions and snowfall in the higher reaches of J&K and Himachal Pradesh

Cold wave conditions prevail in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh as both the states have experienced snow fall. Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar Jammu national highway linking Kashmir with the rest of the world, is plying normally.

  • However, due to heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass the national highway connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley remained closed for the 3rd consecutive day yesterday.
  • Ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius while the night temperature in Ladakh dropped to minus 7.9 degrees Celsius.
  • At the entrance of Lahaul-Spiti, there is a 4-feet thick ice sheet on Rohtang Pass.

The indigenously manufactured Rose Squash of the Sandhya Self Help Group of Maili village of Punjab has made its way to the Indian Parliament along with marking its presence at global platforms.

  • A few months ago, a demand was placed by Parliament for more than 500 bottles of rose squash.
  • Demands are also pouring in from United States Canada and other countries.
  • Stupendous effort by the 14 women of the Self Help Group of Hoshiarpur district has set an example for women empowerment.
  • The women group is engaged in the manufacturing of every variety of pickles, jelly, chutney, squash, honey, maize flour and pulses.

 

  1. Supreme Court stayed the NGTs order directing opening of a new path to Vaishno Devi shrine

The Supreme Court stayed the National Green Tribunal, NGTs order directing opening of a new path to Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu for pedestrians and battery-operated cars from the 24th of November.

  • The court passed the order after the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board told the apex court that it was not possible to open the new path from the 24th.
  • The construction work of the new path was going on and it would be opened in February end next year.
  • Two paths to the shrine were already operational and this is the third path which is being built by the Board.

 

  1. First edition of Smart Mobility Conference was inaugurated in New Delhi

Minister for Road Transport and Highways inaugurated the first edition of Smart Mobility Conference in New Delhi.

  • Rising congestion on roads and highways is a very serious problem in the country which is leading to severe pollution problem and road accidents.
  • It’s high time that public transport should be run on electricity and the country should move to alternative fuels as these are cost effective and less harmful.

 

Focus of the conference

  • The Smart Mobility conference focuses on smart mobility solutions that enable faster, greener and cheaper transportation of people and freight while reducing congestion and aims to set sustainable and electric mobility management system in the country.

 

  1. Key to success in space endeavours is bringing down the cost of space technology

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman said, the key to success in space endeavours is bringing down the cost of space technology which can benefit common citizens.

  • The Indian Space Programme is helping in governance and ISRO is extremely capable of supporting space infrastructure.
  • ISRO chairman said, Chandrayaan-I discovered water on the moon and the Mars Orbiter space aircraft just completed 3 years in orbit.
  • Today India has 42 satellites that are providing earth observation, communication and navigation facilities.

 

  1. UIDAI said Aadhaar data is completely safe

The Unique Identification Authority of India, UIDAI, said Aadhaar data is completely safe and secure and there has been no leak or breach at its database. UIDAI clarified that Aadhaar numbers which were made public on the websites do not pose any real threat to the people as biometric information is never shared and is fully secure. The Unique Identification Authority reiterated that Aadhaar security systems are the best of the international standards.
