  1. On completion of one year of demonetisation, Prime Minister hails people’s support to government in eradicating corruption and black money

Prime Minister said he bows to the people for steadfastly supporting several measures taken by the government to eradicate corruption and black money. On the completion of one year of demonetization, PM termed the move as historic and a multi-dimensional success.

 

  1. Air quality in Delhi hits the severe category for the second consecutive day

A choking blanket of smog again enveloped the national capital as air quality hit the severe category in Delhi for the second consecutive day.

  • The rapid fall in air quality and visibility began Monday evening itself as moisture combined with pollutants shrouded the city in a thick cover of haze.
  • Central Pollution Control Board’s member secretary said pollution in the national capital region is likely to remain severe till tomorrow as per the forecast made available by India Meteorological Department.
  • The air quality index of the Central Pollution Control Board had a score of 487 on a scale of 500, indicating ‘severe’ levels of pollution

 

Stubble burning is the main reason behind the severe level of pollution in Delhi and the neighbouring areas.          

  • The Punjab government has filed an affidavit before the High court, claiming it has prohibited indiscriminate burning of agricultural waste in the entire state.
  • The court, thereafter, asked the Delhi government and the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan to place before it the steps taken by them

 

Impact:

  • As a thick blanket of haze hung low over the city, visibility levels plunged. Poor visibility hampered flight operations, leading to delays in schedule of over 300 flights while around 25 Delhi-bound trains were delayed.
  • The Indian Medical Association said, the capital was witnessing a public health emergency.
  • The Delhi government has said, all primary schools will remain closed in Delhi today in view of the deteriorating quality of air in the city.
  • The toxic haze hanging over Delhi thickened, leading to near zero visibility at many places, even as air quality slid further. 

 

  1. Government’s digital push has yielded encouraging results

The Union Government’s digital push has yielded encouraging results, especially with regard to cashless transactions in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Digidhan Abhiyan has enabled the people of the state, small traders and merchants to go for digital payments in their everyday financial transactions.
  • After NITI Aayog announced launch of the schemes Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digidhan Vyapar Yojana to give cash awards to consumers and merchants, the utilization of digital payment instruments for personal consumption expenditures, enhanced all over the states.
  • Digidhan Mela, organized at several places, played important role in creating awareness about the benefits of digital payment. In Digidan Mela, people were provided free wi-fi to download and install mobile apps for on the spot digital payments.
  • Digidhan Mela was followed by camps organized at state and bank branch level helped people in learning and practicing digital payment system.

US President has issued a sharp warning to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, telling him the weapons he is acquiring are not making him safer, but putting his regime in grave danger.

  • In an address to South Korea’s parliament, Trump called on all nations to join forces to isolate North Korea and deny it any form of support.

 

  1. MC Mary Kom won gold medal in 48 kilogram category at Asian women’s Boxing Championships

Five-time world champion MC Mary Kom won gold medal in 48 kilogram category at Asian women’s Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.

She defeated North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi. Mary Kom prevailed in a unanimous 5-0 verdict to add another accolade to her already crowded cabinet.

This is Mary Kom’s first international gold medal since the 2014 Asian Games and her first medal in over a year.
