QUIZ – 2016: Insights Current Affairs Quiz
29 October, 2016
Q5, October 27th (Click Here): An unexpected error while uploading the solutions. Here’s the explanation for the ‘Biosecurity’ measures question –
- Biosecurity helps protect farms against every disease, not only avian flu.
- Biosecurity refers mainly to good farm practices.
- It is a way to avoid contact between animals and microbes.
- If there are outbreaks of avian flu, stronger measures than in normal times must be taken.

NOTE: Please remind yourselves to read the introduction to the quiz regularly! This is posted everyday, and that’s why, most skip reading it. Somewhat similar to the case of the UPSC syllabus – everyone wants to give the exam but many, and dare we say, most, do not read the syllabus. To quote a part of it here again, “This quiz is intended to introduce you to concepts and certain important facts relevant to UPSC IAS civil services preliminary exam 2016 (read 2017). It is not a test of your knowledge. If you score less, please do not mind. Read again sources provided and try to remember better. Please try to enjoy questions, discuss the concepts and facts they try to test from you and suggest improvements.”
The questions may be tough, because you are likely not to have come across the news – we post questions from multiple sources which includes the BBC, PIB releases and features, PRS Monthly Policy Reviews, Indian Express and the Hindu, among others. We can, if required, frame a hundred questions on a daily basis, because there are so many news sources. That, is not the main idea of this initiative. Neither is this quiz, we repeat, a “test of your knowledge”. With a focus largely on current affairs-based questions, some with a plain General Knowledge motive, and some with a mains perspective, these questions are meant to help you read news (regardless of the number of articles and sources you read from) in an active and not a passive manner. And to a good extent, it is meant to help you improve your knowledge and approach to reading news relevant to and with a focus on the Civil Services Examination (Pre + Mains). You may be disheartened if there’s an article on which you think we may ask a question, but turns out we actually don’t. No big deal. You are the one who gains with the knowledge (so long as it is relevant!). Remember, this quiz is not the UPSC preliminary exam. The next UPSC Preliminary Exam is on 18th June, 2017. Happy quizzing 🙂
The following quiz will have 5-10 MCQs . The questions are mainly framed from The Hindu and PIB news articles.

1. Question
1 pointsConsider the following list of countries:
- Brazil
- Russia
- India
- China
- South Africa
Which of the above are members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)?
Correct
Solution: d.
If you read the BBC article whose link was was provided yesterday with the solution of two questions, you would have noticed that the ‘CCAMLR’ was mentioned, and you would have read that “24 countries and the EU have agreed that the Ross Sea……”. This ought to have made you wonder whether India is a member of CCAMLR or not. Had you checked that, you could have answered this question, because India’s mentioned in only one option.
- The goal of CCAMLR, now numbering 25 members (24 nations and the European Union), is to preserve marine life and environmental integrity in and near Antarctica. It meets every year in late October to deliberate on the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Antarctic Ocean.
- At this meeting in Hobart, Australia, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) agreed unanimously to designate the Ross Sea as an MPA, after years of protracted negotiations, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced.

Question 3 of 8
3. Question
1 pointsSardar Vallabhai Patel’s organisational capacities are well known, especially in association with his diplomacy in winning over several hundred princely states as independence approached. However, the state of Hyderabad and Junagadh had to be coerced into joining India, post Independence. Who is considered responsible for their accession to India?
Correct
Solution: a.
Trick question. Sardar Vallabhai Patel himself, along with V.P. Menon are considered responsible for the integration of all Indian states. Lord Mountbatten’s talk to the Chamber of Princes on 25th July, 1947 is considered an important event, for it put across a message to most of the princes that “independence for them was a mirage”. But Mountbatten was not responsible for the implementation of the process of integration, and certainly not with coercing Hyderabad and Junagadh into acceding to India.
