Question 3 of 4
3. Question
1 pointsWhich of the following statements with regard to the Ramsar Convention is/are incorrect?
- All human-made sites which includes fish ponds, rice paddies and reservoirs are designated as wetlands under this convention
- Designation of suitable wetlands for the “Ramsar List” and ensuring their effective management is the core purpose of the convention
- The Ramsar Convention is the first Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) at the global level
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
Correct
Solution: b.
Statement 3 has been retrieved from this Ramsar document which need not be read.
The Ramsar Convention uses a broad definition of wetlands (just ‘wetlands’, not ‘wetlands of international importance’). It includes all lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, and all human-made sites such as fish ponds, rice paddies, reservoirs and salt pans.
Under the “three pillars” of the Convention, the Contracting Parties commit to:
- work towards the wise use of all their wetlands;
- designate suitable wetlands for the list of Wetlands of International Importance (the “Ramsar List”) and ensure their effective management;
- co-operate internationally on transboundary wetlands, shared wetland systems and shared species.

Correct
Ans: a.
A couple of questions were posted on this topic earlier as well.
In Energy Sector and Power sector, Agricultural Demand-side Management (AgDSM) consists of those activities, methodologies, awareness, policy and technologies that influence consumer (farmers) behavior and changes their (farmers) consumption patterns. The objective of the AgDSM programme is to reduce peak demand, shift the time during which electricity is consumed to off-peak hours and to reduce the total quantum of consumption. The AgDSM proposition is very simple i.e. replacement of inefficient agricultural pump sets with BEE star rated and high efficiency pump sets to reduce the amount of electricity needed to pump water in agriculture sector.
