If you can’t do great things, do small things in a great way.
– Napoleon Hill
What does the exam really ask for? Does it ask for your simplicity or sophistication? Does it look for points or polish? Does it look for the way you think or the way you talk? Does it look for who you are or what you appear as?
I have always held a very firm belief that the IAS exams is a true reflection of your thought process, your entire personality comes into play here, right from your presence of mind in the preliminary rounds to the way you present yourself in the final interviews. Everything counts. It becomes a common practice to groom ourselves in every sector possible in order to give ourselves the greatest chance to clear the exam and it is absolutely right that we do it. We do not want to miss out on a few small things.
Having said that, the exam is about those little things that make you who you are. At every point, I believe the examination is trying to assess you, make sure to try to get to the core of who you are and why you want this so much. Don’t make it tougher for the system to identify you, simplify the process. It is not about bringing an flamboyance of sophistication, it is about bringing who you are, convincing the process and above all yourself as to why you are such a perfect fit for this. Like Napoleon Hill says, it is not about that one great thing, it is about these small things which make that one great thing happen.
